Birth Trauma: What Is It and How Does It Affect Us?

Pregnancy is often seen as an exciting and hopeful time. Parents spend months
imagining what life with their little one will look like, while also preparing for birth
with their medical team. And while many births don’t go exactly as planned, most
families are able to move through the experience and begin recovery.
Sometimes, however, the birthing process can feel overwhelming, terrifying, and
out of control. In these cases, the experience may be perceived as traumatic and
can lead to emotional, psychological, and physical symptoms — similar to post-
traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Giving birth and welcoming a newborn into the world is already an incredibly
vulnerable and exhausting experience. When the process is traumatic, it can
deeply impact our sense of safety, mental health, and connection to ourselves,
our baby, and others around us.

Common Symptoms and Impacts of Birth Trauma
• Feeling intense fear, helplessness, or panic when recalling the birth
• Intrusive memories, flashbacks, or nightmares about the birth
• Avoidance of reminders (hospitals, baby items, conversations)
• Feeling detached, numb, or disconnected from yourself, your baby, or others
• Anxiety, hypervigilance, or a constant sense of being “on edge”
• Feelings of guilt, shame, or failure about the birth experience
• Trouble sleeping or relaxing
• Difficulty concentrating
• Physical tension, being easily startled, or feeling restless
• Withdrawing from social situations or support
• Avoiding future pregnancies or medical care
• Strain in relationships, especially with a partner

Healing After Birth Trauma
Experiencing birth trauma is not a reflection of your strength or your worth as a
parent. Many people struggle silently with these feelings, but healing is possible.
Support may come through therapy, community, or gentle steps toward rebuilding
safety and trust in your body and experiences.
